Your iPhone keyboard can do much more than just type. Discover simple keyboard tricks that can make everyday typing faster, easier and more convenient.
We use the iPhone keyboard every day — replying to messages, searching online, writing emails and posting on social media. But many useful keyboard features are hidden in simple gestures that you may never notice.
In this SCV Learn guide, we're sharing 8 useful iPhone keyboard features that can help you type faster, edit text more easily and get more out of your iPhone.
Turn Your Keyboard Into a Trackpad
Need to move your cursor to a specific word or position? You don't have to repeatedly tap the screen.
- Open any app where you can type.
- Touch and hold the Space bar.
- Wait until the keyboard turns into trackpad mode.
- Move your finger around to position the cursor.
SCV Tip: This is especially useful when editing long messages or correcting a word in the middle of a sentence.
Quickly Enter Numbers & Symbols
Switching between the letter keyboard and number keyboard can feel slow when you're typing quickly.
- Touch and hold the 123 key.
- Slide your finger to the number or symbol you want.
- Release your finger.
Your keyboard will return to the letter layout automatically.
SCV Tip: Great for quickly typing prices, phone numbers, percentages and symbols.
Undo Your Last Edit With a Gesture
Made a typing mistake or accidentally changed some text? iPhone gives you a quick way to undo your last edit.
Swipe left with three fingers to undo your last edit. Swipe right with three fingers to redo an edit.
Alternative: iPhone also supports Shake to Undo, which can be turned off in Settings → Accessibility → Touch.
Create Your Own Text Shortcuts
Do you repeatedly type the same words, phrases or information? Let your iPhone do the work for you.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.

Finish your sentence → tap the Space bar twice
Your iPhone automatically inserts a full stop followed by a space.
Type Faster With QuickPath
Instead of tapping every letter individually, you can slide your finger from one letter to another to form a word.
- Place your finger on the first letter.
- Slide across the letters of the word.
- Lift your finger when you finish the word.
- iPhone will predict the word.
SCV Tip: QuickPath can be especially useful when typing with one hand. Availability depends on the keyboard language.
Use the One-Handed Keyboard
Using a larger iPhone with one hand can make some keys difficult to reach. You can move the keyboard closer to your thumb.
- Touch and hold the Emoji / Globe button.
- Select the left or right keyboard layout.
- The keyboard will move closer to your thumb.
To return the keyboard to the center, tap the empty area beside the keyboard.
